Inspired by 1951 Gifu Craft
The Akari Long Centipede Floor Lamp belongs to a family of paper light sculptures first conceived in 1951. The word Akari means “light” in Japanese — it describes both illumination and the physical lightness of rice paper suspended on the slimmest of frames.
Crafted from handmade mulberry washi paper stretched over a black iron armature, the long centipede form rises 74.8″ tall in a quiet, vertical rhythm — an ideal presence for entryways, stairwell corners, or beside a reading chair where soft, enveloping light is most welcome.
About the washi paper: Each shade is folded and mounted by hand. Fine fiber texture, subtle tonal variation, and gentle surface irregularity are natural characteristics of genuine mulberry paper — not manufacturing defects.
